Yael Bartana (1970, Israel) is an artist who explores the imagery of identity and the politics of memory through the mediums of photography, film and installation. Her starting point is the national consciousness propagated by her native country, Israel which is meticulously observed by the artist. Bartana investigates the meaning of words like “homeland”, “return” and “belonging” through the ceremonies, public rituals and social diversions that are intended to reaffirm the collective identity of the nation state. In recent years Bartana has been experimenting and expanding her work within the cinematic world, presenting projects such as Inferno (2013), a “pre-enactment” of the destruction of the Third Temple, True Finn (2014) and Pardes (2015). Yael Bartana represented Poland in the 54th International Art Exhibition in Venice with the trilogy And Europe Will Be Stunned (2006-2011). She has had numerous solo and group exhibitions including: “Trembling Times”, Musée cantonal des Beaux-Arts (Lausanne, Switzerland, 2017); “Theatre Dreams of a beautiful afternoon – Part 2”, Manifesta Foundation (Amsterdam, Netherlands, 2016); “Inferno”, Stedelijk Museum (Amsterdam, Netherlands, 2015); “Conditions of Political Choreography”, Neuer Berliner Kunstverein (Berlin, 2017); “Embracing the Contemporary: The Keith L. and Kathy Sachs Collection”, Philadelphia Museum of Art (Philadelphia, USA, 2016); 31st São Paulo Art Biennial (Brazil, 2014) etc.
